MS Dhoni Breaks Silence on Retirement Rumors

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain and legendary wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni has finally addressed the ongoing speculation about his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). In a recent podcast with Raj Shamani, Dhoni clarified his stance, giving fans hope that he may continue playing beyond IPL 2025.

Dhoni’s Retirement Rumors: What Sparked the Speculation?

Rumors about Dhoni’s retirement gained momentum when his parents attended CSK’s match against Delhi Capitals at Chepauk Stadium. Many fans speculated that this could be his last IPL season, especially since Dhoni has been playing a reduced role as a finisher rather than a regular batsman.

However, after the match, Dhoni made no official announcement, leaving his future open-ended. Now, in his latest podcast appearance, he has shed light on his plans.

Dhoni’s Statement: “My Body Will Decide When I Retire”

During the podcast, Dhoni dismissed immediate retirement talks, stating: “No, not yet. I’m still playing in the IPL. I take things one year at a time. Right now, I’m 43, and by the end of IPL 2025, I’ll be 44. After that, I’ll have about 10 months to assess whether I can continue playing or not. But the decision isn’t mine alone—my body will decide.”

This statement suggests that Dhoni is not ruling out a return in IPL 2026, provided his fitness allows it. His cautious approach indicates that he wants to avoid rushing into a decision and will evaluate his physical condition before committing to another season.

CSK Coach Stephen Fleming Also Dismissed Retirement Talks

Earlier, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming had also denied any discussions about Dhoni’s retirement. When asked about the speculation, Fleming said: “No, it’s not my job to end his journey. I don’t know anything about it. I’m just enjoying working with him. He’s still going strong, and I don’t even ask him about it these days—you guys (media) do.”

Fleming’s comments reinforce the idea that Dhoni’s retirement is not imminent and that the decision will be entirely his own.

What’s Next for Dhoni in IPL 2025?

While Dhoni has not confirmed IPL 2025 as his final season, his role in CSK may continue to evolve. In recent years, he has taken a backseat in batting, often coming in during the final overs to finish games. However, his leadership, wicketkeeping skills, and experience remain invaluable to the team.
